What This Week’s Data Shows
Below is a snapshot of this week’s live MarketFIT data, highlighting key shifts in demand, capacity, and pricing across top U.S. freight markets.
Freight market conditions in Cedar Rapids, IA improved over the past week, with the Overall Fit Score increasing by 1.71 points to 28.63. This modest increase continues the market’s broader recovery from its late-July low of 19.48, although the current score remains slightly below the recent peak of 29.75. Current conditions indicate positive market momentum, driven primarily by elevated carrier rejection activity despite a slightly unfavorable freight-flow balance. As an important freight market in eastern Iowa, Cedar Rapids supports freight movements associated with agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, renewable fuels, and regional distribution throughout Iowa and the broader Midwest.
Outbound Tender Volume is at 14.3, compared to 15.5 for Inbound Tender Volume, resulting in a -1.2 Head Haul Index. This slight negative differential indicates that inbound freight volume modestly exceeds outbound demand, suggesting that more equipment may be entering the market than leaving with outbound loads. While this dynamic would typically place some downward pressure on rates, the imbalance remains relatively small and is currently outweighed by elevated carrier rejection activity.
The Outbound Tender Reject Index (OTRI) is currently at 29.85, indicating highly elevated carrier rejection activity and constrained contracted capacity. An OTRI approaching 30 suggests that carriers are rejecting nearly three out of every ten contracted outbound tenders, potentially shifting a significant amount of freight into the spot market. This level of rejection activity gives carriers greater pricing leverage and may create upward pressure on spot rates as shippers compete for available capacity.
Overall, Cedar Rapids is demonstrating positive market momentum, supported by a week-over-week increase in the Fit Score and a sustained recovery from its late-July low. Although the Head Haul Index remains slightly negative, the elevated OTRI suggests that capacity constraints are the dominant market force and that conditions currently favor carriers. As a key Midwestern agricultural and manufacturing market, Cedar Rapids’ conditions will continue to be influenced by crop and livestock production, food processing, renewable fuel shipments, manufacturing output, and regional distribution demand.

- Ontario, CA → Phoenix, AZ — Avg. Rate per Mile: $3.73
- Joliet, IL → Cincinnati, OH — Avg. Rate per Mile: $3.47
These lanes continue to offer attractive earning potential as pricing remains elevated across major Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast freight corridors, providing carriers with consistent opportunities in high-demand regional markets.
